About SKY

SKY is a firmwide initiative to emphasize and strengthen diversity and promote inclusion. Although SKY initially focuses on gender and ethnic diversity, our goal is to identify and remove cultural barriers and biases that prevent all BKDers from maximizing their potential—see ourstatement on systemic racismfor more. Together, we aim to create an inclusive BKD culture that leverages our differences, while creating a level playing field for everyone.

Through focused strategies and solutions, we’re building an inclusive environment where BKDers are empowered and unique perspectives are valued.

Stand Against Racism

In response to the continual killings, violence, and racism against Black people, and the recent deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, BKD is doing our part to keep the workplace safe, welcoming, and full of opportunities for all—with no exceptions. Inclusion, acceptance, and equality are all embedded within the firm’sPRIDE valuesand culture. In this five-minute video, CEO Ted Dickman addresses the ways BKD’s SKY initiative helps the firm address the need for change—starting with challenging unconscious biases and valuing the differences between us.

Enhance BKD’s Inclusive Culture

By celebrating our differences, leveraging our unique talents, and developing an awareness of our unconscious biases, we can build the cultural competence to better understand our co-workers and clients. SKY offers a variety of educational programs to build knowledge of diversity and inclusion and direct BKDers’ individual career growth. Some examples include BKD’s internal SKY email alerts that offer relevant knowledge and resources for personnel, the SKY Professional Development Series that creates live training opportunities, and the SKYx Women’s Conference—a two-day program focused on career education and networking.

Develop & Grow BKD’s Diverse Talent

As BKD continues to grow, building team diversity is critical. Through greater diversity, varied backgrounds, and unique perspectives, we’re better positioned to meet evolving client needs and continuously innovate how we do business. Through inclusive recruiting practices, targeted developmental programs, and increased transparency about the path to partner or managing director, BKD supports employees’ career growth. Specific programs, such as the Sponsor-Protégé Program or our Emerging Leaders Academy, support diverse BKDers as they advance to leadership positions.

Engage Firm Leaders

Our leaders pave the way for our team members by championing diversity within the firm. By collaborating with BKD’s leaders on strategic actions, we promote greater ownership in building an inclusive culture. Programs like our SKY Discussion Series and office-specific SKY strategic planning build inclusive leaders, create action, and drive lasting change.
